Vacationers turn to Ooty, Kodaikanal and avoid northern states affected by earthquake

Coimbatore: With recent earthquake in Nepal and its backlash in other nearby states in north, several tourist cancelled trips to the Hill stations in the north instead chosen Ooty and Kodaikanal for holidaying this summer.

As compared to last year the number of tourists visiting Ooty, were more and the enquiries for vacancies and altering the tour to the famous hill station in the south. This summer it looks like people are favouring Ooty and Kodaikanal, according to the data by 15th of May all the Resorts and Hotels in Ooty are booked, said the Managing Director of Connect Holidays Mr. Rajasekar S. The majority of bookings are coming from Mumbai and Delhi, as told by many travel agents.

Tourist who had reserved for Kulu, Manali, Shimla, Darjeeling and Gangtok are cancelling the trips and focused towards the south said a booking agent. "Even some of them chose to Vishakapatnam and various historical spots in the south as there is a dread for such natural disasters which can happen in the other hill stations also", said Joby from G T Holidays.

Joby also said that people who cancelled pilgrimage to Himalayas are now moving to Varanasi. "Hotels are getting reserved on a faster pace", said agents in Varanasi. According to S Ashok Kumar, a ticket booking agent of Om Travels, says that Kodaikanal is the first choice among tourist rather than Ooty this year. "The tourists who had booked hill stations in the north are now turning to hill stations down south".

“After the earth quake the whole two weeks observed a vast recession in the travel industry but now it is back to its mark," said the agent. A travel agent had received just 40 enquiries for Ooty last year but this year he received more than 70 enquiries which are confirmed and booked as well.

“The month of May is the perfect season for Ooty and Kodaikanal and mostly people from Malaysia and Singapore mostly prefer to trip to this region," said an agent. even the places which are not so popular or remain unobserved are also preferred this year, like “Kabini near Mysore, Chikmagalur and many such spots are becoming choice for trip this year. The houseboats and such hill stations down south are already reserved till May end," said a booking agent.
